Global Warming

Filed under: India, my views — nitin @ 1:48 pm

wow…nice pic huh…but under the funny note there is a big harsh truth.

Global warming is a very familiar word in todays media and newspaper.
Western nations have pulled up their socks to combat this burning issue which can eliminate humanity from the face of the earth, if not tackled soon.

But i always wonder what can a normal citizen like me or someone else can do to avoid Global Warming?

What i want from all our media and newspaper is not some discussion abt Global Warming but ways to curb it.
Should i stop using my bike which emits CO2?
should i stop ppl from smoking? 🙂
Shud we stop using anything which emits CO2?

What the hell am i supposed to do, to help reduce Global Warming?

As per my current understanding,an individual can hardly contribute to stop global warming. Its the big industries like  coal, power plants and cars which emits sizable CO2.
Its the government job to impose strict rules and  regulations to check on such industries  to use some alternative fuel for their consumption.

In the Western world, the idea of human influence on climate and efforts to combat, it has gained wider acceptance in Europe than in the United States. But in the newly-developed economies, like India and China the awareness may be in place but the steps in that direction is not yet taken seriously.

China has contended that it has less obligation to reduce emissions, since its emissions per capita are about one-fifth those of the U.S.; the U.S. contends that if they must bear the costs of reducing emissions, so should China.”

I dont think India is anywhere close to doing anything to stop Global Warming. But we are surely getting affected.Like the floods like situation in mumbai from past 3 yrs ,floods in Rajasthan (which is a surprise in a  desert like region)..and in many parts of maharashtra and other parts of india. Also the rise in temperature in the north during summer.Past 3 yrs ,we have witnessed some extreme climate behaviour.

But no one knws how to control it.How to stop it.We can just keep fighting with the immediate problems(like clearing gutters..making dams) but to tackle Global warming a united effort from all the countries both developed and developing nations is necessary.

  1. nice is true tht global warming awareness is needed and people should take steps to minimise individuals effort is also needed to bring this i am not saying tht u shud start walking or cycling to office instead of using a bike (though it may reduce ur tummy..if u hv one..) 🙂 bt i can say instead of two people going in the bike frm the same place to the same destination..can help each other by gving a it may not work out all times..switching of lights and fans..not leaving the TV in standby mode..whn not in use will reduce the electiricty consumption..which in turn will reduce the thermal power generation..

  2. I really agree that it’s hard to know what to do about global warming, and the general answer I use is essentially “as much as you can.”

For example, if you need your bike to get around (to work, school, etc) and you have no alternative, you absolutely should keep riding it. But if you can take a bus or train instead, and it’s not going to have severe negative consequences, do that. Similar things can be done in a lot of areas, like using as little electricity as you need while still doing all you need to.

There are other things you can do, like voting for politicians that share your view on the issue, writing to your representatives in government to make them aware of your concerns, or writing to the power company to inquire about what they are doing about climate change.

There are some things that I don’t know if you can do where you live. For me, in Colorado, USA, the local power companies offer that you can pay slightly more to “get” renewable wind power (you’re paying the extra generation cost, though your house probably doesn’t get that specific electricity). Things like this, and using reusable bags at the grocery store (a rarity here) can make an impact.

You probably aren’t going to make a huge impact alone, but such activities can also allow you to be a positive example to others, who may also change their behavior as a result of your example. That is how change occurs.

  3. I think as individuals we can contribute to global warming. We can buy products from companies which don’t use cfc’s for example. I do know that buying aerosol sprays contributes to global warming…we can also cut down on the use of appliances, recycle our garbage etc.

  4. ooops, made a mistake! I meant as individuals we can help prevent global warming.

  5. @ ramya ,david & nita

thanks for u r suggestions as to how i can help myself recduce global warming.

But my main problem is “there is awarness abt the ill effects of global warming but not on how to prevent it”.

Do we ever read in newspaper a big article on how we can contribute …maybe seldom..but the danger of Global warming is being said loud.

Also ,not keeping it to me far u guys feel that our nation is serious abt this issue…bcos we are the most severly affected ppl…inspite of current climatic changes our govt ..our media has not taken any progressive steps to combat this danger.

I want a campaign like we have for” Aids”..will wait when it will happen…maybe when we will be living at 50 C …ppl will rise to this issue..

  6. I found some info abt this on the net
this four-point plan can drastically cut global warming pollution.
    1.Boost energy efficiency
    2.Better cars
    4.Return carbon to the ground.

I guess less use of vehicles would be a great help an individual can do.

  7. @sree..

I accept all the four points u mentioned..but u failed to get my point here…

As i said in my previous comment.(the one above u r comment) emphasis is on the practical awarness…
Again i insist …”I want a campaign like we have for” Aids”….hope you get my point..

  12. Hey Nitin….I meant that I got ur point…we are not discussing solutions..we are concerned about the lack of awareness among us.
    No, no sarcasm here 🙂

  13. Grt…i think its only you who have got it….

    I was just teasing you…
thanks for understanding the concept…You knw, i think i have very bad communication skills…my main argument is always hidden and ppl dont find it easily..i need to improve on it..

good post and better ideas 🙂

  15. we as individuals surely can bring about a change and stop global warming!!! for ex….switching over to CFL’s from incandescent bulbs….remember tht dis initiative can be done by an individual n its outcome has an effect on everything for the good…..ppl will start following suit…it just requires the will to do it….n if we are determined to do it …it will happen fr 100%….give it a try….
